Why horizons exist
A trend without a time dimension is incomplete. The same development can be real, strategically important and still be years away from structural impact.
Futurist.info therefore separates four questions: What is already happening? What is scaling? What could become structural later? What is interesting but still too uncertain to promote into a trend?
NOW
Observable change with meaningful real-world deployment or measurable impact today.
NOW does not mean universal. It means the shift has crossed from possibility into operating reality.
NEXT
A change with credible evidence of rapid scaling, generally over the next one to three years. NEXT requires more than a laboratory result or announcement: there should be adoption, investment, repeatability or infrastructure indicating momentum.
LATER
A plausible structural shift, generally three to fifteen years out, whose enabling conditions are visible but incomplete.
Every LATER item must state prerequisites, accelerators, inhibitors, second-order effects and what evidence would move it closer.
WATCHING
A weak signal, unresolved research path, early business model or emerging behavior worth monitoring without asserting that it will become structural.
WATCHING is intentionally allowed to fail.
Promotion rules
WATCHING → NEXT requires repeated evidence outside isolated pilots plus improving economics or institutional adoption.
NEXT → NOW requires meaningful deployment and observable consequences.
LATER → NEXT occurs when critical prerequisites move from uncertain to demonstrably achievable.
Items can also move backward or be retired.
The discipline
The objective is not to maximize the number of predictions. It is to make uncertainty visible.
A foresight system should remember what it was uncertain about.
