The signal
Tech companies are publishing early standards that let AI agents find each other, exchange offers and complete transactions. Most activity today is experiments and developer previews, not everyday commerce.
Where it could lead
If agents can negotiate directly, a lot of routine buying — supplies, travel, subscriptions — moves out of human hands. The businesses that can be “found” and dealt with by agents gain an edge; those that can’t become invisible.
Evidence that would strengthen the case
- Major retailers, airlines or suppliers accept orders placed and negotiated by outside AI agents
- One or two protocols become the common standard, the way HTTPS did for the web
- Payment networks and insurers define who pays when an agent strikes a bad deal
What could prevent it
- Fraud, manipulation or runaway agents cause losses that spook businesses
- Competing standards fragment the market so no agent can talk to everyone
- Customers simply don’t trust a machine to spend their money
