The weak signal
Connection queues, on-site generation and regional moratoria may reveal where AI growth collides with physical infrastructure.
This belongs in WATCHING, not NOW or NEXT. There is enough evidence to justify attention, but not enough to treat the outcome as inevitable.
Why I’m watching it
Weak signals matter when they reveal a possible change in capability, economics, regulation or behavior before that change is visible in mainstream adoption. The discipline is to notice without prematurely declaring victory.
Hypothesis
If this signal strengthens, it could contribute to a larger structural shift in energy over roughly 1–5 years.
Base case
Progress continues unevenly. Useful applications emerge, but constraints keep the signal from becoming a universal transformation.
Acceleration case
A cost breakthrough, enabling standard, regulatory change, major customer adoption or complementary technology causes deployment to move much faster than expected.
Constraint case
Economics, reliability, infrastructure, safety, public acceptance or regulation prevents the signal from escaping a narrow niche.
Wildcard
A neighboring technology changes the problem itself, making today’s assumed path either dramatically easier or largely irrelevant.
Confirmation signals
- repeat deployments outside flagship pilots;
- improving economics with transparent operating data;
- standards and insurance products beginning to normalize the activity;
- customers changing budgets or workflows around the capability;
- multiple independent suppliers demonstrating similar performance.
Disconfirmation signals
- repeated pilot programs without scaled follow-through;
- economics that depend on subsidy or exceptional conditions;
- persistent safety or reliability problems;
- declining investment accompanied by weak customer retention;
- a competing architecture solving the same problem more simply.
Review cadence
Reassess at least annually, or earlier if a major technical, regulatory or commercial threshold is crossed.
