What’s happening
AI tutoring and adaptive learning platforms are spreading quickly in schools, universities and corporate training. Most still sit alongside a traditional classroom rather than replacing its structure.
Timing: LATER — roughly 5–10 years before this becomes structural.
Why it matters
Education has been organized around the group for over a century. Truly personal learning would change the role of teachers, how students are graded and how fast people can retrain for new careers.
What would make it real
- Schools and employers organize progress by mastery rather than by semester or grade
- Solid evidence that adaptive systems improve results across different kinds of learners
- Teachers trained and supported to work alongside AI tutors
What would kill it
- Privacy concerns over tracking students in detail
- Evidence shows learning gains are small or unequal
- Institutions resist changing grades, calendars and credentials
