The bottom line
As synthetic content and algorithmic mediation expand, signals of human origin, imperfection and direct trust become more valuable.
Why it matters
Authenticity becomes an economic and social differentiator. The trend reaches media, brands, hiring and professional identity because people increasingly need ways to distinguish genuine human contribution from polished synthetic output.
From the foresight archive
Jim Carroll first published this as Megatrend #28 on 2025-08-11. He revisited it one year later on 2026-09-14, using the retrospective to test the original call against what had happened since.
In that retrospective, Carroll’s own shorthand assessment was: Nailed it, and undersold it. The brand-trust research was the easy part of this prediction. The harder, more interesting part — readers routing around the algorithm, and candidates being judged on work instead of a résumé — is the one actually reshaping bookstores, newsletters, boardrooms, and hiring desks all at once.
This page treats the 2025 article as the original foresight call and the 2026 article as the first evidence checkpoint. Later signals and scorecards can be attached without rewriting the historical record.
