The bottom line
Autonomy is moving toward smaller machines, distributed systems and coordinated swarms designed for narrow physical tasks.
Why it matters
The important point is not a single tiny robot. It is the ability to deploy many specialized autonomous units for inspection, sensing, maintenance, agriculture or medicine. Different applications will mature at very different speeds.
From the foresight archive
Jim Carroll first published this as Megatrend #17 on 2025-07-18. He revisited it one year later on 2026-08-27, using the retrospective to test the original call against what had happened since.
In that retrospective, Carroll’s own shorthand assessment was: Uneven, and that’s the real story. The healthcare and bio-hybrid side is still mostly behind lab doors. The infrastructure-inspection side is already a multi-billion-dollar market doing exactly what I described.
This page treats the 2025 article as the original foresight call and the 2026 article as the first evidence checkpoint. Later signals and scorecards can be attached without rewriting the historical record.
