A decade of progress in a year; the humanoid robot era is here, and it’s accelerating with astonishing speed and breathtaking developments.

The opportunity

Build a skilled workforce capable of designing, operating, and maintaining the advanced technologies that are transforming industries, ensuring future competitiveness.

From “Decoding Tomorrow: 30 Megatrends - #29 The Arrival of the Humanoid Robot - “A decade of progress in a year; the humanoid robot era is here, and it’s accelerating with astonishing speed and breathtaking developments.”” (August 2025)

The humanoid robot industry is accelerating due to a convergence of advanced AI, collapsing hardware costs, and massive new investment. This is moving humanoids from science fiction to industrial reality, with deployments scaling in factories to address global labor shortages. The next wave will expand into healthcare and elder care, bringing the long-term vision of domestic assistance closer to reality.

So what’s up? We are clearly at the Humanoid Robot Inflection Point: We stand at a historic inflection point in humanoid robotics, driven by the powerful convergence of exponential AI advances, unprecedented capital investment, revolutionary training technologies, and rapidly falling hardware costs—all unfolding within a distinct geopolitical landscape that will shape the future of work.

AI in Design and Simulation: Advanced simulation tools not only accelerate AI training but also reduce the need for expensive physical prototyping. AI-driven generative design can optimize mechanical parts for strength and weight, minimizing material usage and manufacturing complexity.

From “AI Megatrends - AI In Manufacturing: Further Accelerating the Automation of Everything - and going from $6.2 billion to $181 billion in 8 years!” (April 2023)

Consider the trends which have already led to a massive acceleration of everything having to do with the world of manufacturing. As I describe in my keynote description: Collapsing product lifecycles. Mass customization. Digitization, robotics, and the cloud. Design based on crowd thinking. Build to demand, as opposed to building to inventory, business models. The role of the Internet of Things in product innovation as well as manufacturing process innovation. Spatial innovation with advanced manufacturing robotics. New materials and substances that allow for a change in product development. Rapid prototyping, sketch to scale, and agility-based business models…. are you ready for the new world of manufacturing?

While popular media and opportunistic politicians portray a picture of a sector in crisis, smart manufacturing executives are furiously busy with innovation, reinventing their capabilities, processes, and business models using advanced ideas, materials, methodologies, and technologies.

American Manufacturing Resurgence: Reshoring Accelerates Significantly And Manufacturing Becomes A Digital-First Industry As CEOs Invest In Emerging Technologies Like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics And More 17 April 2023, Dow Jones Institutional News

From “Daily Inspiration: 25 Things for 2025 – #12: “Align to reality. Ignore the hype!”” (December 2024)

I shared concerns in July that the transformer-based-architecture underpinning generative AI was a dead end, and that there were few ways we’d progress past the products we’d already seen, in part due to both the limits of training data and the limits of models that use said training data. In August, I summarized the Pale Horses of the AI Apocalypse — events, many that have since come to pass, that would signify that the end is indeed nigh — and again added that GPT-5 would likely “not change the game enough to matter, let alone a new architecture to build future (and more capable) models on.”

Human-Machine Collaboration: The synergy between humans and machines is evolving, with technologies like brain-computer interfaces and advanced robotics enhancing human capabilities and creating new opportunities for collaboration. Industries thinking about this include healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics/warehousing.

Extended Reality (XR) : The expansion of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) is transforming sectors such as education, entertainment, and training by providing immersive experiences and new ways of interaction. Think of the impact on education!
