Beyond smart, we are building living cities: integrated ecosystems designed for a resilient, equitable, and profoundly human future.

The opportunity
Improve traffic flow, reduce accidents, enhance accessibility for all residents, lower emissions, and optimize the efficiency of urban mobility networks.

Cities are not just growing, they are evolving into integrated systems for food, energy, transportation, and living that function very different from urban environments. This represents a massive infrastructure opportunity, particularly as 67 megacities (cities with over 10 million inhabitants) will exist, with a combined population of approximately 670 million. It’s called the ” integrated city” , and it’s a pretty significant transformation of what we think of as urban areas.
What’s it all about? Cities worldwide are undergoing their most profound transformation since the Industrial Revolution. This is not merely about making cities “smarter ” with technology, but about a fundamental rethinking of the entire concept and layout of a city. It’s not just about a bunch of smart technology, but a complete rethinking of systems for food, energy, transportation, and living. By 2035, this shift will redefine urban life, particularly as the world accommodates 67 megacities housing a combined 670 million people.
Add to this the fact that experience is showing some very real generational preferences when it comes to cities and urban areas. Millennials show a preference for dense, walkable urban cores with mixed-use developments and access to public transportation. Generation Z? The most urbanized generation expects tech-enabled city living with seamless digital services and sustainable infrastructure - something that matches the overall tech-enabled world that they live in.
From “Decoding Tomorrow: The Way Forward: #9 Auto & Transportation - “A decade from now, the automotive landscape will be dominated by companies that treated 2025’s reality check not as a crisis, but as the greatest competitive opportunity they ever witnessed!”” (October 2025)
Where are we at this point, and what’s the way forward? The once-unquestioned acceleration toward an all-electric, fully autonomous future has been interrupted by significant headwinds, particularly in Western markets. This has triggered a strategic divergence: legacy automakers seem to be giving up on the trend to once again concentrate on carbon vehicles, squeezing as much as they can out of a dying platform, while new, aggressive Asian automakers take over a future based on EVs.
Autonomous systems continue to struggle with “edge cases”—unpredictable real-world scenarios that human drivers navigate with common sense. Simply put, they have to work 99.999999% of the time correctly, and this might be near impossible to achieve. (Tesla fanboys often descend upon such statements with the rabid ferocity of a feral dog in search of meat.) This is reflected in sober forecasts: a 2025 white paper from the World Economic Forum concludes that Level 2/2+ systems will dominate the personal vehicle market for the next decade, with only around 4% of new cars sold in 2035 featuring Level 4 capabilities. That’s a pretty big pullback!
Personal Autonomous Vehicles (Level 3/4) : Adoption of Level 3 systems, such as Mercedes-Benz’s DRIVE PILOT, remains a niche luxury feature, constrained by high costs and strict operational limitations.
From “Decoding Tomorrow: 30 Megatrends - #2 : Ambient Intelligence - ""AI is the invisible architect dissolving computing into the very fabric of our lives.”” (June 2025)
Computing is no longer confined to screens and devices-it’s vanishing into our physical world. Smart sensors embedded in walls adjust lighting based on your mood, while Al-powered fabrics in clothing monitor health metrics without your awareness. Voice assistants anticipate needs without being summoned, and autonomous vehicles make thousands of decisions invisibly.
Smart Traffic Management: Systems optimize traffic flow by analyzing vehicle and pedestrian data, enabling dynamic lane changes, real-time adjustments to traffic signals, and instant hazard alerts, thereby reducing congestion and emissions.
Hyper-Automation : AI and IoT combine to create autonomous systems that optimize workflows without human intervention across various industries, from manufacturing to supply chain management. In factories, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) plays a major role in smart manufacturing systems.
