Original 2021 statement: Human brain augmentation technology will become a mainstream industry within the decade
What Jim has written about this
From “Daily Inspiration: “It’s time to move from triage to tomorrow!”” (January 2023)
My last 3 events before Covid were firmly linked to the opportunities of the future. The American Truck Dealers Association brought me in for a keynote that took at the electrification of their industry, the arrival of hyper-connected trucking technology, and the potential for autonomous technology. Syngenta, the global agricultural company, had me in for a talk to key dealers on how farmers were aligned to fast-moving science trends with fast genomics, autonomy, the potential world of 24-hour farming, and more. The Canadian Golf Superintendents Association - my very last in-person event in March 2020 - took a look at the future of the golf industry, some of the new technologies, concepts, and ideas coming into the game, and how that might influence their work.
Just-in-time insurance will dominate the industry within a decade
Most of the cost of equipment in every industry will be within the software and the chips - and not within the other hardware
From “The BIG Future: “Regenerative Medicine” and a New Era of Healthcare Science” (January 2023)
The impact is that ideas that were once ‘crazy’ are now becoming mainstream. Years ago, I spoke on stage about a future in which we might be 3D printing human body parts. But it’s not really science fiction anymore - we’re already ‘3D printing!’ NSK and Cyfuse Biomedical have agreed to collaborate in the development of new technologies for regenerative medicine and cellular therapy products. In recent years, NSK has been promoting “NSK Vision 2026: Setting the Future in Motion” which describes a ten-year vision based on NSK’s corporate philosophy rooted in Motion & Control. Cyfuse has been developing 3D cellular products for regenerative medicine such as nerve conduits, artificial blood vessels, and bone and cartilage, utilizing its proprietary bio 3D printer technology that enables the creation of advanced cell structures.”
I originally visited this topic years ago for a medical conference, and then again when I keynoted the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons - it’s a topic that has been unfolding at a steady pace for years. ( The image above is from my keynote for that organization in Nashville .) I also just covered this in trend #7 of my 23 Trends for 2023 series - ” Crazy Ideas Go Mainstream .” I’m trying not to duplicate my efforts, but this is perhaps one of the most important trends of our time - and the research I’m undertaking for this new trends piece indicates that the science of regenerative technology is evolving even faster than expected, in part, driven by big, bold goals.
Overall, the field of regenerative medicine is full of big, bold, audacious goals. Research is underway to determine how to repair damaged heart tissue to deal with cardiovascular disease, which would include developing lab-grown blood vessels and heart valves. In the field of neurological science, research is underway into repairing damaged spinal cord tissue and brain injuries to help deal with stroke and spinal cord injuries. The concept of regenerating insulin-producing cells in the pancreas might help to provide a pathway to cure diabetes. Techniques are being explored on how to use regenerative science to accelerate the healing of wounds. The National Eye Institute? A recent press release suggested that they might see real results providing significant vision solutions within the decade.
From “Daily Inspiration: (Grading My 2014 Predictions About 2025) - “Sometimes you need not be right you just need to be bold!”” (January 2025)
#5 - A constant stream of bio-connectivity data drives healthcare decisions. By 2025, most people in the developed world will have 3 or 4 bio-connectivity medical devices linked to them on a 24/7 basis. Some will be small, intrusive chips buried under the skin that constantly monitor medical vital signs such as blood pressure, glucose levels, temperature, oxygenation level, and heartbeat. This data will be beamed and streamed continuously to a massive, anonymous healthcare grid that will constantly analyze the data for patterns, variances, and trends. Such data will routinely help the medical industry discover the outbreak of disease and flu, and predict the emergence of potentially, previously unidentified global or regional health risks. Worldwide, new medical infrastructure will have emerged that will guide political decisions on the best spending patterns to ensure overall societal health in an era of ever-more-scare healthcare support dollars. Claude.AI: Bio-connectivity Medical Devices. Grade: Correct . Analysis: Wearable health technology has exploded. The global medical wearable market reached $21.3 billion in 2023, with devices monitoring everything from heart rate to glucose levels. Apple Watch, Fitbit, and other devices have mainstreamed continuous health monitoring.
#22 - Light has been stopped in its tracks . Within the confines of an innovative new network router technology, light has been slowed down from approximately 186,000 miles per second to - literally nothing. Zero. 0. Dead stop. The impact? Network routing technology that allowed for the instant evaluation of each light photon, and instant determination of destination and origin. The result was an immeasurable and staggering increase in broadband speed; so much so that “yottabit-to-the-home” became the new, established buzzword for the world of telecom . Claude.AI: Light Stopped in Tracks (Network Technology). Grade: Didn’t Happen . Analysis: While network speeds have increased dramatically, the described light-stopping technology hasn’t materialized. However, quantum computing and quantum networks have made significant advances in data processing and transmission.
Finally, consider the human element. Some of my predictions about social and structural changes have taken longer than expected. That’s because transforming human behavior and institutions is infinitely more complex than advancing technology.
